It is an honor to join the School of Humanities and Sciences in an era of unprecedented achievement, discovery, and innovation. The faculty and students of H&S are integral to The Stanford Challenge, the university’s transformative five-year campaign that seeks solutions to the world’s most pressing global challenges and embraces the role that Stanford plays in educating the next generation of leaders. H&S faculty research and teaching in the areas of human health, the arts, the environment, and international issues exemplify the excellence and breadth of the school. In political science, our faculty are working with medical school researchers to develop more effective methods of distributing AIDS drugs in Africa and involving undergraduates in a project that looks at the link between natural resources and despotic regimes in the developing world. Our drama students are using their honors thesis projects to reach out to incarcerated youths and gang members, introducing them to a new form of expression through acting. At the Hopkins Marine Station, researchers are studying the profound impact that humans have on the world’s seas, developing practical solutions that lead scientific, commercial, and political interests toward a common goal: restoring fragile ocean habitats. These are just a few examples of the ways in which our faculty are integral to the university and to The Stanford Challenge. Within this Web site, you’ll find links to exciting new projects that H&S is leading. The Institute for Research in the Social Sciences, formed in 2004, provides a hub for faculty from different disciplines to come together to work on complex issues like racial and economic inequalities, bio-social science, philanthropy and society, and the American national elections. The Division of International Comparative and Areas Studies brings together faculty and students who are working on the political, cultural, religious, and historical context for common issues across the globe. All of this is made possible through the generosity of our friends, volunteers, and donors, who support our new endeavors while sustaining and growing the core of the school. I look forward to being a part of this community, where what seems impossible becomes possible, and where the search for new knowledge and new ideas is fulfilled each day. Richard Saller
