In Professor William Gilly's Holistic Biology course, Stanford undergraduates take an unforgettable journey of discovery.
They spend the first half of the course at Stanford's Hopkins Marine Station, learning about the ecology and history of the Monterey region, measuring the abundance of intertidal creatures, listening to a host of guest speakers, and reading the literature of Steinbeck and others.
Next they are off for a month-long voyage around Baja California's Sea of Cortez. Gilly, a leading expert on the Humboldt squid, assembles a group of ecologists, oceanographers, historians, and literary scholars to accompany the students on their journey. As these experts perform their own research, students pitch in, learn new techniques, and develop individual projects.
