This course offers graduate students from diverse backgrounds an overview of academics at Stanford, its multicultural community, and its environment of support.
Offered every fall quarter by Dr. Ayodele Thomas, associate dean for graduate education and diversity at the School of Medicine, this course welcomes graduate students from all of Stanford's seven schools and assists them with adapting to Stanford's academic, psychosocial, financial, and career-building approaches. Lectures focus on highlighting resources. Topics include:
- Panels with faculty and students from underrepresented minority groups
- Managing advisor/advisee relationships
- Making the most of campus resources
- Life outside research
- Writing for a graduate school audience
- Using your PhD to pursue a career
Faculty, advanced graduate students, campus administrators, and Dean's Office staff deliver guest lectures. Presentations include information about important Stanford resources including:
- Hume Center for Writing and Speaking
- Graduate Life Office
- Career Center, BEAM
- Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning
- Vice Provost for Graduate Education
The grading basis for this one-unit course is satisfactory/no credit. Attendance and participation in all class meetings is expected and only one unexcused absence is allowed. Auditing is permitted, upon instructor approval, for students who have exhausted allotted credits. Students leaving the seminar early due to scheduled conflicts will be excused.
