Matthew D. Morrison wins Woody Guthrie, Irving Lowens book awards

Matthew D. Morrison, an associate professor in the Department of African and African American Studies, has received two awards for his 2024 book Blacksound: Making Race in Popular Music in the United States. From the International Association for the Study of Popular Music-U.S. Branch, Morrison received the 2026 Woody Guthrie Award, which is granted to an outstanding book by a first-time author. From the Society for American Music, Morrison received the Irving Lowens Book Award, given to the best book in the field of American music.
