John Chowning receives Technical Grammy
John Chowning, the Osgood Hooker Professor in Fine Arts, Emeritus, and professor, emeritus, in the Department of Music, has been awarded a Technical Grammy from the Recording Academy. He was honored for the discovery of frequency modulation (FM) synthesis during his doctoral studies at Stanford in the late 1960s and for his use of this technology in his compositions. Chowning is also a co-founder of Stanford's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA).
